Steve Higgins

What’s it all about, Steve?

I’ll cut to the chase straight away: I’m the author of a novel called ‘Floating In Space’ set in Manchester in 1977 and I publish a weekly blog post available every Saturday about 10:00 am UK time which I hope will keep you entertained. Click the blog link at the top of the page to read them!

The blogs are full of anecdotes, stories and observations about life in general, usually linked to shameless plugs of my book.

Sometimes they are just shameless plugs of my book. Incidentally it’s now available in paperback!

Get the picture? Yes, my weekly blog posts are just a shockingly blatant marketing ploy, a brazen attempt to lure you into the clutches of my web page and get you to buy my novel or my poetry anthology( or maybe even both!)

I like to think of Floating In Space as a sort of kitchen sink drama for the seventies. Remember ‘Saturday Night and Sunday Morning’ set in the fifties and ‘A kind of Loving’ set in the sixties? Floating In Space is a similar kind of thing but set in the seventies.

Here’s me reading the opening paragraph:

What about your Blog?

popartpic1ed

Well, I know I said earlier that my blog is a brazen marketing ploy but let’s get serious, it’s actually a regular blog with new posts every Saturday taking a look at the lighter side of life, and when I say life, I usually mean mine. Not only that, it’s not always light stuff; I do get serious sometimes.

I also write about books and movies and I hope you’ll enjoy reading and sign up for a regular post from me, then buy my book (come on, you knew there was going to be a catch!)

Take a shufty over to the left at the ‘previously on Steve’s Blog’ section and you’ll see the sort of things I write about. If you scroll down further you can even sort my posts by subject.

Carry on to hear more about my novel Floating In Space, what it’s about and some stuff about me and my new poetry anthology A Warrior of Words.

If you fancy something a little more visual, here’s my website encapsulated into a short video:

Who am I?

I’m from Manchester in the North West of England and I’m a writer who has taken advantage of 21st century digital developments to get published.  My novel ‘Floating In Spaceis available as a Kindle e-book or a paperback and now publishers Cyberwit have now released my poetry anthology A Warrior of Words.

What sort of things are you going to find in my blog posts? Well, I like Formula One racing, movies, especially classic movies and I’m at my happiest with the TV remote in my hand watching something like ‘Casablanca.’

I read a shed load of books when I’ve got the time and my ambition, apart from wanting a shed (for my shed load of books) is to lie in the sun, near to a swimming pool and a bar and read even more. I’m pretty sociable and I do like dining out, in fact, I think dining out is one of the great experiences in life.

Even if we don’t have any of these things in common, we can still be friends, especially if you buy my book!

To be quite frank, my blog posts cover almost anything I can think of and write about but mainly they are about books, films, television and me and my little old life.

As I’ve now managed to acquire some experience of writing and blogging I’ve even tried to impart some of my writing knowledge in a few ‘how to’ posts. Scroll right down and on the left you will see my posts by subject.

So you’re just plugging your books then?

Well, I wouldn’t say just plugging my books, you get to read my posts completely free. Of course, if you want to read either my novel or my poetry anthology then put your hand in your pocket and buy it. If you are interested in poetry, here’s a video clip of one of my poems which incidentally, was recently selected by Think Shorts.

My posts are mostly anecdotes but I write about all sorts of stuff that catches my eye. There’s also plenty about two of the great loves in my life, books and classic movies, so expect to see a whole lot of stuff about my movie and writing heroes and I’ll try not to bore you too much.

Just to give you a little taster about my book ‘Floating In Space’, here’s another video. In this one I make a return trip to Manchester in 2017 and talk about what inspired me to write the book and take you on a nostalgic trip around a few of the real life Manchester locations mentioned in the text. If you fancy checking out a few more videos click the links at the top of the page. If you’re ready to buy, great –click here!

My new poetry anthology has just been published by the book people at Cyberwit and you can get a copy from Amazon just by clicking here.

  1. Just to say that I have very fond memories also of the Playground pub on Oxford Street. Almost next to the Palace Theatre. My mate and I made regular excursions there when he was in town. There was once, about 1974, an attractive barmaid working there. Who was also some sort of Dancing Queen. She suddently left the bar to go onto the dance floor to shoe George McCray how to do it. Glorious days in Black and White, as you say. Then a pint at the Salisbury across the road. Sadly, the Playground has long gone. But not in our memories, where it’s a special place. Now 70 years young!

    • Yes, loved the Playground. Had an 18th birthday celebration in the Salisbury and remember George McCrae playing on the jukebox. Great memories and thanks for sharing yours.

  4. Good morning Steve, just to let you know I sent you a reply regarding your Twitter coaching enquiry! I don’t normally do this but I saw there was no reminder for enquirers to check their spam folders if they hadn’t heard back and wanted to make you aware that something was indeed sent in case it ends up in your spam box!

    All the best.

    • Somewhere in the links at the top of the page lies the answer to your question, either in print or in a video where I ramble away to the camera. In short, I took some essays about life as a bus conductor, working men’s clubs and pubs and bars and made it into a novel. Thanks for looking in, oh and yes, that avatar does look a little like Hinter Thompson! It’s those aviator specs I used to favour!

      • I have only published one book so I’m hardly an expert but I was rejected 3 times by traditional publishers before turning to Createspace and Amazon. I think now I should have kept trying. Even successful books like the Harry Potter series or even Hemingway were rejected time and time again so be prepared for rejection. Just do more research and send your manuscript off to someone else. If you do self publish, be prepared for endless blogging, tweeting and youtubing to promote your book!

      • Im sure rejection can be the most difficult part. Im finding it difficult to promote my own art as I am learning as I go. My wife is a writer and working on her first book which she hopes to have completed in a couple months. All we can do is keep trying and do what we love. Thank you for the advice and good luck with everything!

  9. I like the honesty of your About page. A totally gimmick-free approach that should win over the right readers. In my view the big battle is making people aware that our work exists so that they have a fair opportunity to decide whether to read it, but beyond that I want only the _right_ readers for my work, not just anyone who’s willing to invest their personal resources in it at the risk of being unfulfilled or disappointed. Hopefully your novel will find all of the right readers it needs.
