Steve Higgins

So what’s this site about?

giphyI’ll cut to the chase straight away:  I’m the author of a novel called ‘Floating In Space’ set in Manchester in 1977 and I publish a weekly blog post available every Saturday about 10:00 am UK time which I hope will keep you entertained.

The blogs are full of anecdotes, stories, and observations about life in general, usually linked to shameless plugs of my book. Sometimes they are just shameless plugs of my book! Incidentally it’s now available in paperback! Get the picture? Yes, my weekly blog posts are just a shameless attempt to lure you into the clutches of my web page and get you to buy my book!

I like to think Floating In Space is a sort of kitchen sink drama for the seventies. Remember ‘Saturday Night and Sunday Morning’ set in the fifties and ‘A kind of Loving’ set in the sixties? Floating In Space is the same sort of thing but set in the seventies.

Here’s me reading the opening paragraph:

What about your Blog?

popartpic1edWell, as I mentioned earlier it’s  a regular blog with new posts every Saturday taking a look at the lighter side of life, and when I say life, I usually mean mine. Not only that its not always light stuff, I do get serious sometimes.

I also write about books and movies and I hope you’ll enjoy reading and sign up for a regular post from me, then buy my book (come on, you knew there was going to be a catch!)

Take a shufty over to the left at the ‘previously on Steve’s Blog’ section and you’ll see the sort of subjects I write about.

If you carry on you’ll hear about my novel ‘Floating In Space‘, what it’s about and some stuff about me.

Who am I?

I’m from Manchester in the North West of England and I’m a writer who has taken advantage of 21st century digital developments to get published. I’ve had a few of my poems published in anthologies and I’ve just self published my novel ‘Floating In Space‘  as a kindle e-book and it’s also now available in paperback form.output_t5vKY2

I like Formula One racing, movies, especially classic movies and I’m at my happiest with the TV remote in my hand watching something like ‘Casablanca.’ I read a shed load of books when I’ve got the time and my ambition, apart from wanting a shed (for my shed load of books) is to lie in the sun, near to a swimming pool and a bar and read even more. I’m pretty sociable and I do like dining out, in fact, I think dining out is one of the great experiences in life. Even if we don’t have any of these things in common, we can still be friends, especially if you buy my book!

Steve HigginsSo you’re just plugging your book then?

Well, I wouldn’t say just plugging my book -you get to read my posts completely free. Of course, if you want to read my book then put your hand in your pocket and buy it!

My posts are mostly anecdotes but I write about all sorts of stuff that catches my eye. There’s also plenty about two of the great loves in my life; books and classic movies, so expect to see a whole lot of stuff about my movie and writing heroes and I’ll try not to bore you too much!

Just to give you a little taster about my book ‘Floating In Space’, here’s another video. This one is me telling you what the book is about and showing you a few of the real life Manchester locations mentioned in the text. If you fancy checking out a few more click the link at the top of the page. If you’re ready to purchase, great –click here!

  1. Hey Steve,

    • Somewhere in the links at the top of the page lies the answer to your question, either in print or in a video where I ramble away to the camera. In short, I took some essays about life as a bus conductor, working men’s clubs and pubs and bars and made it into a novel. Thanks for looking in, oh and yes, that avatar does look a little like Hinter Thompson! It’s those aviator specs I used to favour!

      • I have only published one book so I’m hardly an expert but I was rejected 3 times by traditional publishers before turning to Createspace and Amazon. I think now I should have kept trying. Even successful books like the Harry Potter series or even Hemingway were rejected time and time again so be prepared for rejection. Just do more research and send your manuscript off to someone else. If you do self publish, be prepared for endless blogging, tweeting and youtubing to promote your book!

      • Im sure rejection can be the most difficult part. Im finding it difficult to promote my own art as I am learning as I go. My wife is a writer and working on her first book which she hopes to have completed in a couple months. All we can do is keep trying and do what we love. Thank you for the advice and good luck with everything!

They are very convincing and will certainly work.
Still, the posts are very quick for newbies. May you please lengthen them a little from next time?

    Thank you for the post.

  4. I like the honesty of your About page. A totally gimmick-free approach that should win over the right readers. In my view the big battle is making people aware that our work exists so that they have a fair opportunity to decide whether to read it, but beyond that I want only the _right_ readers for my work, not just anyone who’s willing to invest their personal resources in it at the risk of being unfulfilled or disappointed. Hopefully your novel will find all of the right readers it needs.
