What’s it all about, Steve?

Hi, I’m Steve Higgins, a writer and author from Manchester in the north west of England. I’d like to introduce you to my book Floating in Space.

A young man tires of his mundane office job in Manchester, quits everything to go and live in Spain, then returns home disillusioned. His next journey around the streets of Manchester in 1977 is not the one he imagined he would be taking!

I like to think of Floating In Space as a sort of kitchen sink drama for the seventies. Remember ‘Saturday Night and Sunday Morning’ set in the fifties and ‘A kind of Loving’ set in the sixties? Floating In Space is a similar kind of thing but set in the seventies

Timeline

My new book Timeline is also available from Amazon. Timeline is a collection of various things; some of my favourite blog posts, a little poetry and some short stories. Some of the stories have been published over on my Medium page and there are a few that have never been published. The title story, Timeline, is available to read now in the downloads section.

 

Blog Posts

Why not take a look at my blog posts while you are here. What sort of things will you find? Well, there are over 730 published posts to choose from. I like to write about Formula One racing, movies, especially classic movies and I’m at my happiest with the TV remote in my hand watching something like ‘Casablanca.’

Take a look over to the left at the ‘previously on Steve’s Blog’ section and you’ll see the sort of things I write about. If you scroll down further you can even sort my posts by subject.

I read a shed load of books when I’ve got the time and my ambition, apart from wanting a shed (for my shed load of books) is to lie in the sun, near to a swimming pool and a bar and read even more. I’m pretty sociable and I do like dining out, in fact, I think dining out is one of the great experiences in life.

Even if we don’t have any of these things in common, we can still be friends, especially if you buy one of my books!

  1. Hi Steve, is your book available in audio? I love your accent and could listen to it all day. Reminds me of being read stories as a child 🥰

    • Hi and thanks for watching. Brian carried driving HGVs. Until recently he was doing night deliveries. I did think about asking him if we could do a follow up video which would have been good but unfortunately he retired this year. Saw him not long ago and he was well. Pity about that follow up video, it would have been good.

  3. Just to say that I have very fond memories also of the Playground pub on Oxford Street. Almost next to the Palace Theatre. My mate and I made regular excursions there when he was in town. There was once, about 1974, an attractive barmaid working there. Who was also some sort of Dancing Queen. She suddently left the bar to go onto the dance floor to shoe George McCray how to do it. Glorious days in Black and White, as you say. Then a pint at the Salisbury across the road. Sadly, the Playground has long gone. But not in our memories, where it’s a special place. Now 70 years young!

    • Yes, loved the Playground. Had an 18th birthday celebration in the Salisbury and remember George McCrae playing on the jukebox. Great memories and thanks for sharing yours.

      • Hi Steve. I’m Allan Marilyn husband. My radio programmes go out on a Monday and Wednesday mornings from the studio in Swinton. I usually have guests on Wednesdays. My programme starts at 11am until 12 noon. I am away from this Wednesday until February 13th. My first slot for a guest is Wednesday February 20th or anytime after. If you are interested if you could please give me a call on 07946 618553 tomorrow(Monday) or Tuesday evening anytime after 6pm.

Hi Steve,just read your book,I worked at birchfields at the same time as yourself,I recognised a lot of the characters and some of the incidents mentioned,it brought back a lot of happy memories,it was your old mate Brian who told me about the book,birchfields was a great place to work,all the best,Johnny White.

    • Somewhere in the links at the top of the page lies the answer to your question, either in print or in a video where I ramble away to the camera. In short, I took some essays about life as a bus conductor, working men’s clubs and pubs and bars and made it into a novel. Thanks for looking in, oh and yes, that avatar does look a little like Hinter Thompson! It’s those aviator specs I used to favour!

      • I have only published one book so I’m hardly an expert but I was rejected 3 times by traditional publishers before turning to Createspace and Amazon. I think now I should have kept trying. Even successful books like the Harry Potter series or even Hemingway were rejected time and time again so be prepared for rejection. Just do more research and send your manuscript off to someone else. If you do self publish, be prepared for endless blogging, tweeting and youtubing to promote your book!

      • Im sure rejection can be the most difficult part. Im finding it difficult to promote my own art as I am learning as I go. My wife is a writer and working on her first book which she hopes to have completed in a couple months. All we can do is keep trying and do what we love. Thank you for the advice and good luck with everything!

  26. I like the honesty of your About page. A totally gimmick-free approach that should win over the right readers. In my view the big battle is making people aware that our work exists so that they have a fair opportunity to decide whether to read it, but beyond that I want only the _right_ readers for my work, not just anyone who’s willing to invest their personal resources in it at the risk of being unfulfilled or disappointed. Hopefully your novel will find all of the right readers it needs.
